a 9.0? Wow I am surprised how good Square is getting at turning games that initially weren't really appealing into want-able and sought after experiences. (think FF14 and FF15) I even have the PS3 copy of Nier Replicant at home but never really played it.

I'm not sure whether anyone has pointed this out yet, but in this video you made quite a few comments about how they've "added" new stages, new cinematics, new endings etc. It's not wrong to see this as new from your perspective, however this is simply not the case. The original Nier that we got in the states was released in Japan as Nier Gestalt. Alongside that version, Nier Replicant was released in tandem. It included all of the things you've mentioned as new, just not in the version we received here. The only reason I bring this up is because it feels unfair to glorify this release as having a huge amount of new content, when in reality it's just a remaster. That doesn't detract from the fact that this game is an absolute masterpiece, I just began to feel like you may not have done your research. Thanks for the, as always, amazing video! keep up the good work!

Oh i was expecting them to do something dumb like remove all those special sections (especially the one where you got to read) where they changed things up. Good to know they haven't. Those were what made Nier such a singular experience, all the way to the ending. Maybe that is why i am not really wanting to jump back in. I went through this journey already when the original came out.

I would give it a shot. It's its own thing in a lot of ways. This was the main version that was initially released in Japan alongside Nier Gestalt (the version we got) and it's meant to be played many times over for new scenes and endings. The final ending leads directly into Nier Automata, so it's nice that we're finally getting it.

I think Nier is something I will never fully get, besides the core fighting mechanic, which seems solid, everything looks and feels bland. I got roped into playing all the endings of Nier Automata and while a great game with interesting choices, I honestly can't put my finger on why everyone treats it like a philosphical masterpiece - same also with this remake. I know Ben doesn't want to show the best parts, but every dialogue in this review looks like the garden-variety RPG text and him saying you have to persevere through bland gameplay in the beginning to get to the good storyparts after unexciting fetch quest doesn't sound all that exciting. I will still give it a chance and probably will try to stay till the end with it, but I suspect it won't feel that different than Automata (which still, is a very solid game in my book!). That said, I am happy, when games dare to be different.

Nier Automata is one of the best games ever made. Even though it literally took me 17 hours to make it through the first mission I'll always respect what they created. It's remarkable. Automata was so good that I honestly don't have a choice but to purchase this. Platinum is what everyone thought CDProjektRed was before Cyberpunk. Probably the best devs around right now.

I really love nier:automata, and while playing Replicant the Nier magic sometimes shows through, but DAMN that first act is sloooooow... I hope it picks up. In Automata your first 5 hours you experience spaceship fights, hand to hand combat with a oil-rig, robot wars, amusement park rides, a battle with a robotic opera-singer, seeing robots giving birth to a naked anime-antoganist.... And in Replicant you collect mutton and apples...

One could say that NieR is actually Drakengard but without dragons. Everything in the game, weapons stories, magic, runes languages, verses refers to the Drakengard. In "The Strange Work of YOKO TARO" book is mentioned that YOKO consider NieR to be the true Drakengard. I hope we'll get Drakengard 4 or at least Remake.

one of my favorite things about yoko taro is just how little he cares about silly things like "flaws" and "negative aspects" hell it'd appear like he doesn't even care if a game is good, as long as it makes you feel something. and honestly, i'd personally like more of that and less efforts towards "perfect games" taro is one of the very few who actually fully grasps the potential of video games as a storytelling medium

Might aswell start with Replicant if you can. You'll get the story and lore in the correct order. I played Automata first, which is totally doable as it's a stand-alone, but you'll miss on references to the previous games (Replicant mostly, but Drakengard too), and even worse, you'll have an idea of how Replicant ends before even starting the game, which is a shame for such a great story driven game.

Drakengard 1 and 3 were games I played when they came out but I never had a chance to play the original Nier... and I figured I'd have no reason to (I'd heard about the jank-ass gameplay but great story and characters). Now I wish I could walk that back because despite the fact that I'm playing through the Replicant remaster and it is still a damn fine game, I kinda wish I didn't know what the deal was with the story and characters... lol.

How can this game get a 9 when it does not work on PC, the physics engine is tied to the framerate, just like they did in the 90's on console. Well the game will run slow or extremy fast on pc depending on your setup. And no, there is no option in the game to cap the fps.

    • UchiMata

      UchiMata

      پیش 19 روز

And what if the user only has integrated graphics? They may have no way to cap the framerate as the GPU control center for integrated GPU's are usually very bare bone. However you look at it, it's bad.

The script of this review is kind of obnoxious. It's like it was written by a college freshman who was unduly praised for their intelligence in high school. Normally, my suggestion to someone who writes like this would be for them to read the script aloud and see if it sounds awkward. This has already been read aloud though, so I'm not sure why nobody recognized how awkward it sounds.

@Michael Moratto A chronological viewing sounds really interesting, that's a great idea. I'll probably do that on my second viewing (though I imagine it will probably be over a year from now, minimum). Yeah, I definitely need to see The Missing Pieces. I had seen FWWM on amazon and had thought it had contained them as part of the movie but I was misinformed lol. Next time I go through Twin Peaks I'll without a doubt be seeing The Missing Pieces in proper context, should be rewarding. I'm definitely always interested in seeing added bits of cut info in cases like this so that will be nice. That edit by Q2 sounds really interesting, I'll save it for when I want to watch Twin Peaks again, thanks. And yeah, that makes sense. Though not ideal for a first time viewing seeing everything chronologically for context should do wonders like you mentioned. Always a cool alternate way of seeing things. That's true that The Return does do a lot with the remainder time left for plot that isn't several minutes of Dougie acting like a NPC or several minutes of someone sweeping the floor (not to knock those scenes, they're great too lol). It's such a weird season when thinking about the time spent, it's so patient and empty feeling yet also does contain a good, serviceable amount of plot (which on average is frankly outstanding) for its running time. Such a weird fucking set of episodes the more I think about it, haha. I'll be sure to look into that website, I have it save. Sounds like a lot of interesting thematics that'd be right at home in Twin Peaks. The way you describe that site vaguely reminds me of how fans discuss works like Evangelion, the Nier/ Drakengard series, Attack on Titan, The Witness, and something else I'm forgetting (I remember a similar situation of seeing a site / webpage that really explained a lot of details in either a show or a game). That mutual level of passion and detail is always appreciated. David Lynch is such a wild dude creatively. I haven't really looked too deeply into his life but just from everything i've seen here and there (probably about an hour or two's worth of seeing him talk about various things, discounting his appearance in Twin Peaks lol) he really presents himself in a manner that's pretty confidently only himself, almost as if he has to be the way he is. I already have a ton of vids saved with him talking so those will be a treat when I get to them. It definitely is impressive how David Lynch has managed to be on the level of creativity that he's at in his age. I think about my own grandfather working tirelessly on a book he had written and thinkin of The Return always reminds me of that, but on a much larger and more challenging scale. I really hope he's happy with the final product at the end of the day. And yeah that doesn't surprise me about the website lol, just what you'd expect for this level of detail. I'll definitely save that site for future use, should be fascinating. Yeah I imagine people were dreading the show as it came out, both the original and The Return. Must have been such a weird experience compared to just binging it. Especially in the 90s where that kind of show was so commonplace whereas nowadays I think its qualities are almost accentuated by looking back into a different era and seeing how it holds up. And god, if I had to watch The Return one episode at a time I'd have a breakdown lol, must have been so excruciating. I only watched 2 or 3 episodes a day and it was still torturous at times lmao. As much as I really respect how The Return treated Cooper's character, I'll just always be wanting the idealized season in my head where he's taking on an active role for 18 episodes worth of content. There's definitely a metaphorical reasoning for how the show plays it out though, and it's something I'm still working and deeply struggling through in my own life. Touché, Lynch.

Dang you know looking back too it's cool to see stuff written as the show was coming out. Cause people were whining about so much shit, or loving other things. I know people who quit watching the show cause they wouldn't bring Cooper back in full form, and they left like 10-11 episodes in, that's still 5 hours later in the story lmao

@Twin Cherries no, no worries! Love the passion, twin peaks is just one of my absolute favorite things. You know, for a re-watch someday I recommend starting with FWWM! If you've heard of those Missing Pieces too, there's a far more fleshed out and explorative chunk of the movie devoted to Jeffries describing the Room Above the Convenience Store. You get a lot more discussion about the nature of the arm, and his relationship with Bob, and what they wish to do with our world. It was originally like a 20-30 minute scene! There's even an edit by someone who goes by Q2 that places all the missing pieces back into the film, and on the whole it feels very genuine. Not like an AMV or anything. They just left one scene still cut out, where Cooper is talking to Diane who's off camera. Idk why that little bit of creative input, but it's a microscopic loss in what becomes a 4 hour journey with Laura where you truly experience that awful, insane culmination of what she's had to go through. Starting the show again immediately after truly makes you dial in on how people are acting after her murder, like Sarah confronting she was letting her daughter go without even really being aware of it, or Bobby trying to hide the MASSIVE hole left in his soul and blaming the town for it. I really loved the return, and I think whether you felt the lynch-y "oh but then I pull out the rug" overtone coming, I was so impressed at how many interwoven plotlines were fully built out and completed! Back and forth over time even. There's some great research about the return on this site Exploringtheglassbox.weebly.com (I think. Just gonna type that out and hope I remember right) that just dives WAY the fuck in there. Looking into the actual literal origins of the owl cave symbol, or how the corn is tied into the rise of the nuclear age, implying a relationship to the actual lifestyle that came about, of convenience and waste, and the hottest burning fire. And so in a way what else could the black lodge inhabitants want to consume other than this fire born into this world of the same event as them. And then the white lodge, with the fireman, working to protect those that the fire burns inside. Obviously in just kinda butchering it in the moment but they have much more intent to each word, I think it was a side project for a highly professional writer if I remember right. But yeah like for example that map hawk showed off? MASSIVE amounts of info about the woods and the lodges and the nature of garmonbozia. And it's just all stuff that you can tell was intentional and all, but it just makes it AMAZING that David (and not really even much Mark for the return) just kept so much info in the old noggin! That dude is ancient! But you see the behind the scenes and he's just got every moment vividly pictured in his brain. You know they actually made that enterthezone website that Ruth Davenport and Principal Shaggy had in the show? And it even led to a whole real live latitude and longitude I think? Balls to the wall effort

@Michael Moratto (Apologies for the length) Oh man that must have been real lovely yeah. I was fortunate enough that I didn't have to wait at all and just dove in. In all honesty I think a bit of time to separate the first two seasons and The Return would have been warranted and even ideal but I couldn't hold myself back. The first season was a surreal experience and the second season had some of the best episodes of television I've ever seen in my life. Twin Peaks gave me a feeling I don't think I've ever felt before. It was genuinely magical, spiritual and pretty relatable as someone familiar with smalltown American life. Such a weird, emotionally complex core this show has, it's incomparably beautiful (even with everything else the show has going on). And with The Return, what a fucking wild ride. I have complex feelings about it (which I'm sure Lynch intended) but part 8 was absolutely fucking incredible, it alone is a showpiece for the talents of David Lynch and how fucking amazing he is as a filmmaker. Some truly legendary stuff. I think my biggest issue with The Return is it basically went down exactly how I expected it to, with a couple exceptions. Maybe this was intentional and maybe it isn't even a big deal but it's just part of my takeaway with it. Overall though, Season 1, Season 2, FWWM, and The Return all culminate to create a series that is possibly unrivaled in what it has accomplished. I felt astonished after a certain point in season 1 and by the end of The Return. I haven't been so purely captivated by something since my viewing of _The End of Evangelion_ , which in its own right is a crowned pillar of filmmaking to me and similarly, elegantly left me drowning in an ocean of complex emotions. I've actually never heard about Mizzurna Falls before but wow right off the bat you can see the influence, lol. Looks fascinating though, just saved it to look into further. Thanks!

I am not surprised that IGN's "professional" reviewers couldn't handle innovation. This game changes itself as it goes and goes back to what it was. It gives each section a unique feeling. I guess in IGN terms it's "it made me relearn how to play and i had to pay atention. Eww and i had to read and stuff! 6/10!". 😒

I really did not like the original release of Nier but it's heartwarming to know that the remaster is getting a lot of love. It just goes to show that *these* are the types of games that need to be remade--games from more than a decade ago that either didn't execute well or didn't have the technology to provide the experience the designers were hoping to achieve. I hope publishers take that into heart. I'm still kind of turned off about "you have to play it four times to get the full experience" thing, but I may have to give it another go.

The combat, while tighter, is very contradicting to the feel of the game. Having experience with the original, the combat was clunky and a bit cumbersome but it made sense. You are a villager, a father. Not a soldier. That feeling of being a novice with weapons made sense. That game now being smoother and fluid is, to me, antithesis to the sense of struggle Nier provides. Again, you are a father/brother, not a combat android.
